Age: Early Cretaceous, 125 MYA
Utahraptor, like Velociraptor and Deinonychus, belongs to the family of dinosaurs known as Dromaeosaurs. Utahraptor is the oldest and largest of the Dromaeosaurs, growing as large as 7 to 9 feet tall, and 16-18 feet in length.
Utahraptor was especially remarkable for its unusually large hand claws, and single giant sickle claw on each foot. Some scientists believe that Utahraptor and other dromaeosaurs may have hunted in small packs. The foot structure of Utahraptor displays a unique modification of the standard three-toed dinosaurs foot. The large slashing claw was able to swing in a great arc. Most scientists believe that this adaptation was developed expressely for attacking and killing its prey.
