Goniatites are the family of sea invertebrates that include the most ancient and primitive representatives of the group of ammonites. These are characterized by a spiral shell divided into segments of which only the last one was occupied by the animal while the others were used to move vertically through the water. They appeared 430 million years ago in the seas of the Silurian, and reached their peak of evolution during the early Triassic age (230 million years ago).
These samples are polished in order to show the contrasts in color and the suture lines, which correspond to the walls dividing the living area from the segments used to move through the water.
This beautiful Upper Devonian ammonite comes from the Sahara Desert in Morocco. Gonioclymenia Goniatites have a goniatite suture pattern, a wide umbilicus with the shell only slightly overlapping on itself, and broad ribs that radiate like the spokes of a wheel on the surface of the shell. In addition to being found in Morocco, the genus is also found in
Europe.
