Scientific Name: Allosaurus fragilis
Location: Mesa County, Western Colorado, USA
Formation: Morrison
Age: Jurassic, 149 MYA
Allosaurus belongs to the family of dinosaurs known as Theropods. Allosaurs were the largest carnivores of the Late Jurassic. Their remains are some of the most complete and numerous of known theropod dinosaurs.
Unlike Tyrannosaurus, Allosaurus is remarkable for its large hands with fearsome claws. Allosaurus claws do not have a sharp edge on the underside which indicates that they were principally used for grasping (like hawks and owls) rather than cutting. Allosaurus was first discovered in 1869 in Grand County, Colorado. Large adults of the species attained lengths of over 30 feet and heights of 15 to 18 feet.
